Great news for mobile gaming - Sony is working on controllers for smartphones

Sony seems to be re-launching efforts to play games on smartphones. The company’s patent revealed that they could work on a controller like the PlayStation that connects to your smartphone.

For those who didn’t know, this wouldn’t be the first time the Japanese tech giant has tried to make gaming more portable. Back in 2011, the company made the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play phone, a kill phone with a slider that contained a joypad and buttons that were similar to the controller of popular game consoles.

Although the concept was quite innovative and ahead of its time, the technology was quite restrictive at the time. Playing intense 3D games at the time was impossible with the hardware at hand, and with today’s stage of hardware development, this is not that it has become commonplace.

Now gaming smartphones are quite popular in the market, ones that offer top specs and features that can play intense multiplayer titles like PUBG.

Furthermore, the company recently patented a new controller like the PlayStation that is designed exclusively for smartphones. Looking at the pictures of this patent, we can see the legendary buttons, pads and triggers that make it a full-fledged controller.

However, we have no way of knowing if it also supports DualSense vibration motors. Last year there were rumors about the Xperia Play 2, which in the end was not released or just the right time had not yet come.

If this product is real, it would mean one of two things, either that the company is working on an add-on that fits into any smartphone for additional game controls, or that Xperia Play is a device that would offer streaming games (PS Now) with functionality smartphone.
