Will Sony soon face serious competition from Microsoft’s Game Pass? If industry expert Jason Schreier has his way, the answer to this question can only be “Yes!” ring. According to Schreier, the Japanese company already has specific plans for a corresponding offer.

With the Game Pass, Microsoft has long since established itself as the top dog among the gaming Netflix offers. For a monthly price, we get access to a large library of different game titles, including brand new releases. Sony has had little to counter this with its own Playstation Plus and Playstation Now services. But that could change soon.

Game pass competition with three different variants

As journalist and gaming insider Jason Schreier announced in an exclusive article on Bloomberg, Sony is allegedly working on a new service that will compete with Game Pass. This service goes by the code name Spartacus and is intended to give Playstation users access to various current game titles and classics for a monthly fee. According to Schreier, Spartacus will be available on both Playstation 4 and Playstation 5.

The starting shot for the service, which is to combine Playstation Plus and Playstation Now under one roof, is expected to be given in spring 2022. Sony apparently wants to keep the Playstation Plus brand, but give up Playstation Now. This new Playstation Plus should then be available in three versions:

  • Variant A: includes existing advantages of Playstation Plus
  • Variant B: additionally contains various game titles for PS4 and (later also) PS5
  • Variant C: In addition to the features of A and B, it includes exclusive demo versions, game streaming and classic games of the PS1, PS2, PS3 and PSP

Jason Schreier added on Twitter that gamers shouldn’t expect Sony to make new games available through Spartacus on release day. Nevertheless, the service should deliver a better and stronger offer than Playstation Now.

Sony has not yet officially commented on the Bloomberg report. Also, possible prices for the new service have apparently not yet been determined. As soon as we receive further information, we will inform you about it as soon as possible.
