Design and Build
Unchanged but Bold
The physical design of the Asus ROG Strix Scar 18 remains largely unchanged from its 2023 predecessor. This mammoth of a laptop measures 15.71 x 11.57 x 1.21 inches (WDH), making it clear that portability is not its strong suit. Compared to the Alienware m18 R1, the Scar 18 is slightly trimmer and lighter, weighing in at 6.8 pounds versus the Alienware's 8.9 pounds.

Aesthetic Appeal
Despite its imposing size, the Scar 18 manages to make a statement with its design. The aluminum lid boasts an RGB-backlit Republic of Gamers eye logo, exuding a fierce, gaming-oriented aura. Additionally, RGB light bars on both the front and rear of the chassis ensure that this laptop doesn't go unnoticed.
RGB Lighting Quirks
While the Scar 18's RGB lighting is intended to be controlled through the Asus Armoury Crate app, there are some quirks to be aware of. At the time of testing, the presets in the app did not seem to function properly, even after disabling integration with Windows Dynamic Lighting. The latter offers RGB lighting control through Windows Settings, which includes options for color, breathing, rainbow, wave, wheel, and gradient effects. It is worth noting that this issue may be resolved with future updates, and controlling RGB lighting through Armoury Crate is generally preferable due to its wider range of lighting presets.
Material Mix
The laptop's chassis is primarily composed of plastic, a common choice among gaming laptops. While there is some noticeable flex when applying pressure to the front corners, it doesn't raise major concerns. However, one notable drawback is that the laptop's lid doesn't securely stay closed when carried at the side, suggesting that the magnets holding the display shut may need more strength.
Cyber-Inspired Aesthetics
An intriguing aspect of the Scar 18's design is the transition from translucent near the lid to solid at the bottom, with transparent sides along the chassis. This unique, cyber-inspired look may not be to everyone's taste, but it certainly adds a touch of entertainment compared to a plain finish.
Port Selection
The Scar 18 offers a selection of ports, though it can be considered fairly average in this aspect. On the left side, you'll find one Thunderbolt 4 port, one USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port (supporting DisplayPort, G-Sync, and 100-watt power delivery), HDMI 2.1 video output, 2.5 Gbps Ethernet, and a 3.5 mm audio jack. Additionally, the laptop features a barrel-style power jack for charging.
