OPPO shows a new retractable camera

OPPO is ready to host its annual OPPO INNO DAY event in China next week, where the Chinese smartphone manufacturer will present state-of-the-art smartphone hardware, concept products, and other technological advances. Ahead of the event, OPPO unveiled its retractable camera that could debut on the upcoming OPPO flagship model. https://twitter.com/oppo/status/1468143243183468556?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1468143243183468556%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.xda-developers.com%2Foppo-teases-retractable-camera%2F

OPPO's global Twitter account shared a video of the internal camera retraction solution, giving us a brief look at this upcoming camera technology. The teaser video shows an indeterminate OPPO smartphone with a retractable camera structure that allows the lens to physically move in and out.

The video also implies that OPPO managed to install a retractable camera without compromising water resistance. In addition, the smartphone also appears to have a fall detection mechanism that would likely protect the retractable camera module from accidental drops when in active use.

Finally, the teaser reveals that the camera in question has a 1 / 1.58-inch sensor, a focal length of 50 mm, and an aperture of f / 2.4. OPPO did not share any other technical details of its retractable camera. The retractable camera can allow OPPO to offer true optical zoom from the main camera without the need to use a secondary telephoto or periscope lens.

We expect to learn more about the new retractable camera at the OPPO INNO DAY 2021 event, which takes place on December 14, 2021.

OPPO is not the first OEM smartphone to develop a retractable camera. In January last year, Xiaomi unveiled its wide-aperture lens technology, which it developed itself. Xiaomi's camera design has a retractable optical structure that can fit into the phone and expand when needed.
