Samsung T7 Shield - compact, fast and durable portable SSD
Samsung presented a new portable SSD from the T7 line - T7 Shielded, which stands out for its small dimensions, large capacity, high durability, and high data transfer speeds.
Samsung has introduced a new model within its T7 family of portable SSDs – the T7 Shield. It is the most durable Samsung portable SSD from the aforementioned series. Namely, the T7 Shield has been successfully tested against impacts caused by falls from a height of up to three meters. Accordingly, the T7 Shield is suitable for users who are mostly on the move, that is, for content creators who spend most of their working time outside the safety of the office and create their content in open spaces.
Additional security for recorded material is guaranteed by the IP65 mark, which proves that the T7 Shield is resistant to water and dust, which are often difficult to avoid outdoors. Samsung has optimized both the inside and the outside of the device, changing the surface material and improving the software solution for the T7 Shield, thus solving the problems of performance degradation and overheating that occur when transferring large files.
Since the amount of heat generated during transfer is minimized, stable data transfer is enabled without reducing the performance level of the disk itself, even when performing data-intensive and continuous tasks such as recording high-quality video content, editing content, encoding, or rendering.
All of the above is possible thanks to the high performance of the SSD. The Samsung T7 Shield is able to read recorded data at speeds of up to 1,050 MB/s and write new data at speeds of up to 1,000 MB/s. It is approximately twice as fast as its predecessor, the T5 portable SSD, and up to 9.5 times faster than external hard drives.
Recorded data is also protected using hardware 256-bit AES encryption. Samsung T7 Shield comes in three colors of the case – black, beige, and blue and in capacities of 1 TB and 2 TB. The manufacturer supplies two types of cables in the package – USB-C to USB-C and USB-C to USB-A.
The SSD comes with accompanying software – Samsung Portable SSD and Samsung Magician. Samsung has ensured the compatibility of the device with different operating systems – Windows 7 and above, Mac OS X 10.10 and above, and Android Lollipop and above.
Although Linux is not specifically listed in the data, there should be no problem using SSDs on more modern Linux distributions. Thanks to its wide compatibility, it can be used on different devices – computers, smartphones and tablets with Android, and game consoles to expand the data space.
Samsung states that during production and packaging, they also took into account the ecology. The T7 Shield requires only one-third of the packaging usual for previous generations of solid-state drives. In addition, the new disc boasts lower greenhouse gas emissions during the production process - thanks to higher production efficiency.
The dimensions of the device are 88 x 59 x 13 millimeters, and the weight is 98 grams. More detailed specifications are available on the manufacturer's official website. Prices in the US range from $129.99 (1TB) to $249.99 (2TB).
