Samsung's 2nd Gen SmartSSD: Fast, energy-saving and CPU-friendly

Samsung is developing new intelligent SSDs. The South Korean manufacturer is entering the second phase of its SmartSSDs and has already confirmed the completion of the creation of its new second-generation data carriers.

This high-performance SSD, as Samsung refers to it, has data processing features that are intended to transform the way standard SSDs operate. According to the manufacturer, the SmartSSD may process data on-site, reducing data travel between the processor, graphics card, and main memory.

According to Samsung, this technique can circumvent bottlenecks that frequently occur when transporting data between storage devices and the CPU, resulting in dramatically better system performance and increased power economy.

The second generation SmartSSD, when combined with embedded ARM processors, offers more efficient data processing. The firm compares its new SmartSSD to traditional SSDs in data centers and offers a 50 percent reduction in the processing time of scan-intensive database queries, a 70 percent reduction in power consumption, and a 97 percent reduction in CPU use.

According to Samsung, the first generation SmartSSD was developed in collaboration with AMD in 2020 and has already been distributed to worldwide IT firms and video communication technology providers. Also in 2020, AMD announced the $35 billion acquisition of Xilinx, the world's largest FPGA maker, with the transaction set to close in February 2022.

As a result, according to an AMD spokesman, Samsung's second-generation SamrtSSD also includes Xilinx Versal Adaptive SoCs. Finally, Samsung says it is striving to standardize SmartSSD technology and has enlisted the help of the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) and the NVM Express Work Group.
