Reddit sells collectible avatars in the form of NFTs

Two years ago, a new and improved avatar creation functionality was launched, giving users the opportunity to uniquely express their own identity. Soon after, more accessories were made that allowed the avatars to stand out even more, and these accessories were in the form of clothes and hairstyles the avatars.

Since such avatars were well received by users on Reddit, they began to think about allowing them to create licensed avatars in any style, which authors can sell. This is how their digital storefront called Collectible Avatars was created.

In this case, collectible avatars are limited edition avatars created by independent artists in collaboration with Reddit and provide owners with unique benefits on the Reddit platform.

If someone sets his collector avatar as a profile avatar, he will be able to combine it with other accessories. This avatar will be seen in all the usual places where the user leaves their comments and will have a special effect to make it stand out.

Collector avatars differ from other avatars on Reddit in several ways:

  • They are available for purchase (as opposed to free or available through Reddit Premium), and artists will be paid for each collectible avatar sold.
  • The collectible avatars are backed by blockchain technology, giving buyers the rights (license) to use – them on and off Reddit.
  • You don't need cryptocurrency to buy these avatars, nor are they auctioned off. Each avatar has a fixed price and can be purchased in fiat (government) currency.

To store and manage collectible avatars, Redditors will use their Reddit Vault – a blockchain-based wallet.
